questions eXtremesurf
questions How much bandwidth can I use? The accounts are limited by 5gb of transfer a month. Most ISPs only allow 1-2gb of transfer a month. We allow our users to have the freedom of using more. Bandwidth over these limits can be purchased at $5 per GB. Stats are checked monthly. What if I go over my monthly limit? Bandwidth
over the set limits costs $5 per GIG. Our staff monitors monthly transfers.
A user is usually requested to pay after $10 in excess bandwidth has accumulated. What if I need more space? Contact us and let us know how much you need, and we'll make arrangements.
No
you may not. Users do not have telnet access to our machine in order to
prevent the running of harmful scripts and snooping through other users'
files. Users are not allowed to run process intensive scripts or programs
on the server that will affect overall performance. This is unfair to
other users.
Some
user accounts do not have CGI enabled. If you are one of these users please
email us and let
us know. We would be happy to enable this for you free of charge. Also,
place your scripts in a directory called cgi-bin on the webserver. All
scripts are executed under CGI-wrap. If your scripts are not working,
please make sure you have given the scripts proper permission to execute
with the 'chmod' command via FTP.
Make
sure your webpages that include Server Side Includes have the .shtml extension
on them. Files without this extension will not be processed for Server
Side Includes. Some web accounts may not have this feature enabled. If
you suspect you are one of these users who do not have this feature enabled,
please email us
and we'd be happy to set it up for you.
These
are only enabled on request. Email
us if you wish to have them. No,
users do not have telnet access. The only reason someone may ever need
telnet access is to chmod a script which can be done via FTP. Is my credit card automatically billed? Only if the user requests this feature and the credit card is still valid at the time of billing. By default, all users are sent an invoice requesting payment when it's due. Do I get web-based access to my email box? Check
out http://www.yourname.com/webmail/ No,
we are strictly a hosting company.
Make
sure your login and password is correct. Remember, all logins and passwords
are CaSE SenSitiVe. What
kind of uses and content are accepted? We allow most types of pages on our servers, however, there are some exceptions: No
webpages that contain pornography or any type of hate material. Can I change my domain name? We
can change the domain on your account, however you will need to register
a new domain with the registries on the Internet. This of course will
come with a fee. We will change your account's domain free of charge. Can you point two domains to the same site? We can do this, however email will not work on the second domain. We also highly suggest you don't try this. Or, we can set up the domain to forward email to your existing account; however, users will only be redirected to your page when they go to yournewdomain.com/ (and not the sub-pages.) And an additional $3.99 a month may apply.
With
a $3.95 account we can redirect your webpage to another site via PHP or
point it to some other IP address.
No.
Our servers are pounded by attempts to log in to anonymous FTP by 'warez
groups'. If you were to have one of these, one of these people will start
dumping illegal software on your FTP, taking up your space and bandwidth
as well as violating our content rules.
Every
account comes with 5 email accounts. If you wish to have more, each account
is $1 per month more. What do the stats track? The stats track how many page requests, file requests, bandwidth used, top files, top referrals and more. You can access the stats by going to yoursite.com/stats/ and logging in with your username and password. What
kind of databases can I use on my site? I set my account up with eXtremesurf, but my domain doesn't work. Why? Nameservers around the world have to update with the changes made to your domain. This can take anywhere from 10 seconds to 3 days to take full effect. Using
an FTP client, FTP to yourdomain.com (do not include ftp. in yourdomain.com)
using the default port of 21 with the user login/password for your account.
The directory you are placed in upon logging in is your account.

include www. on sub-domains. This is the URL to your control panel. Do logs and email count against my site space? When you add a user under your control panel, you will have the option of making them a site administrator. This allows them to login your domain and change/upload files. If left unchecked they will only have access to yourdomain.com/~theirusrname/ Leave
this box unchecked if you just want them to have an email account.
Log
into your control panel and click "add user" after adding them

Yes,
you can do this under your email options in the control panel. See question
above. Using popular FTP programs you can right click on the file and select the 'chmod' command. An example of this would be using the free program WS_FTP LE. Right
click, Click chmod, check off 'read write and execute' for the owner.
Where do I download my mail? You can do this via the web from http://www.yourname.com/webmail/ or

eXtremesurf
allows incoming and outgoing email with its services. We do however, use
protective measures to prevent the machine and your domain being used
to sent high volumes of unsolicited e-mail commonly known as "spam".
We have enabled relaying, so if you get a 'relaying denied' message while
sending e-mail, check your mail first, then try resending. "But I
want to spam! What do I do?" Please use your dialup/dsl/cable provider's
outgoing mail server, you'll be immediately kicked/banned if you use ours. Sending mail doesn't work, why? See
question above.
Quickest way to find this is by pulling up an MS dos window and typing "ping www.yourdomain.com" it will then say "pinging www.yourdomain.com [your IP in here]"
Yes
you may. These emails may get sent to people if the mailbox was recreated.
It won't do anything if you delete the message.
Under
your control panel, click the blue envelope for your email options. The
section labeled "vacation message" is the autoresponder for
that email box.
Create
a file called .htaccess in the root directory of the server (the one you
refer to as '/'). You can do this in windows notepad or some other text
editor. Upload to your ftp server with an FTP client. "ASCII"
mode is suggested. For
example, you can point to a custom 404 page like this: ErrorDocument 404
custom404.html You can also simply have it display some other text:

How do I use SSL with my site? You'd need your own IP address. This can cost twice as much as your current account. Contact us for more info.
We highly suggest using Phorum. This is a great script that uses PHP and MySQL. yourdomain.com/stats/
holds your stats info. You can also check some stats under your control
panel. What do I do if my stats directory is empty? Wait
for some hits and wait about 24 hours from these hits for it to work.
If you are still having problems you should contact
us. How do I setup a mySQL database/login? You'll
have to contact us

backup the server's config twice daily. However user files are not always

is equipped with a nifty backup program that compresses your site's files
and your email box into a single downloadable file. What versions of software are you using? Our
network info page has all our current stats. Are
there any resources that can help me with my web page designing? Where is perl located? #!/usr/bin/perl Where is sendmail located? /usr/sbin/sendmail How do I setup a catchall alias?
