Joomla 2.5 Release Changed to January 24th

Posted by:

Quick Update:  Joomla has just released Beta 2 of version 2.5, one day after it’s original anticipated GA (general availability) release date.  This will allow some additional time for bug testing and upgrade testing from version 1.7 to 2.5.  This will also give extension developers a bit of extra time for plugin development and update testing.

Just as a reminder, beta releases are not suitable for production sites.  The GA release date is now going to be January 24th, 2012.

I am looking forward to a definite release date for J25. I am developing our websites for our foundation on J17 (see sebari.nl for the first home page idea) but I anticipate the definite versions of the sites will have to be created in J25. Right now Jan24th is the most recent date for general release. I hope somebody will tell us what sort of ‘conversions’ or changes to J17 sites will be necessary in order to be compatible with J25?

Yes Joomla 2.5 is still set to release on January 24, 2012. Joomla 1.7 will reach end-of-life on February 24, 2012, so ideally it would be good to upgrade to 2.5 by then. Since you are developing on 1.7 currently I wouldn’t worry about waiting for 2.5, the upgrade should be quite simple for you. Most 1.7 users can use the automatic update or install the update archive using the Extension Manager: Install option. Most themes and extensions will be supported automatically in 2.5. Upgrading from 1.5 will be a different story.

I just found out about this, and I’m a few minutes away from testing the new Joomla 2.5. Fingers crossed.
